Cindy Knull bio picture
  • Greetings!

When I was six years old, my mother gave me a diary.  I remember very distinctly that it was red with a little brass lock.  This began my journey into recording the details of my everyday life.  Writing has always been a love of mine and a necessary part of my self expression.  While in school working towards my English degree,  I had the opportunity to visit the John Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.  To my great pleasure, the feature exhibits consisted of many great Masters of Photography. One of whom was the great Andre Kertesz.  I immediately fell in love with his ability to form the perfect snapshot and felt something inside myself completely identify.  It was upon reading a quote by Mr. Kertesz that I went home and promptly changed my major to Photography.  The words were simply, "I write with light."

I'm a street shooter at heart, who people hire when they want honest and intelligent images documenting personal events. I dabble in portraiture. I run half marathons. And write, a lot.

I'm currently working on several personal projects. One of which is my first novel.

Dick and Ruby

Tulsa is my hometown.  It is a little big city with a metropolitan flair.  It’s a fast growing city due to the affordability and four seasons climate.  Oklahoma is a great place to live.  One of the unique things about Tulsa is that it has its very own sound, the Tulsa sound.  I’ve always been amazed that Tulsa never flourished into a thriving music scene like Austin or a poor man’s Nashville,  but nonetheless, Tulsa (as well as Oklahoma) has produced some amazing talent that has created the uniqueness of its very own style.  I mean really, J. J. Cale ya’ll!  Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop…helped to create the Tulsa sound which is part blues mishmashed with rock and country.  It’s very distinguishable, influencing Eric Clapton most notably.   We Tulsans even have our own accent called the cowboy accent.  If I get too tired or have one drink more than I should, it really comes out.  I love my hometown.

In my previous life I worked in Tulsa radio.  One of the best people I met in that career is Dick Loftin.  I was working my first radio gig at a country station that merged with the legendary KVOO.  Dick Loftin was on air right across the hall from me.  For a while, I did the 7-midnight slot and when D, as I like to call him, finished his on air show, he would come over and visit me.  We’ve known each other since the early nineties.

Dick and his wife, Ruby, married for eight years, asked me to come do portraits of them during my visit home and I was more than happy to oblige, plus I got a great lunch out of it at a local tex mex favorite, Chimi’s.

Here are a few images of my great friends Dick and Ruby…

Fantastic, as usual! I really love your portraits. The last image in the middle of the street made me catch my breath. Wonderful shot.

The second one is my favorite. As a viewer it seems you have managed to capture their playful personalities. Good job!

Doris, When Cindy asked us to stand in the MIDDLE of the street, we wondered, “Hmmmm,” but Cindy is a gifted photographer [we did what she said to do] and a treasured friend. Ruby took to her right away and we had the greatest time taking these photographs. They are truly beautiful, with bold colors and tremendous styling. I’m a black-and-white guy, so I particularly love the one at the top. It really captures our affection for each other. I’ll always have a table reserved at Chimi’s any time you’re in town, C.
