Is it getting lame in here or what? All my inspiration left once I got on the plane and came back to the midwest. sigh. But covering my butt for Project 365 here are images 67:365.

This is why I love my Honda Element. I have the vinyl flooring so that I can pretty much pour a bucket of soapy water into it and scrub with a brush and wipe it down with a towel. It was 60 today and I was more than happy to clean the muck, grime and salt from my vehicle..inside and out! I got a little bit of help from my very motivated three year old too!

Also, afterward, we played a nice little game of golf. And if most of you have been reading a while you know that my girl loves the ol golf club. And she gets the job done by any means necessary.

Can I just say that I’m lovin my life right now? Gosh, it feels good to say that. I’m such a tortured person, always feeling I’ve gotta fix something or figure something out or find the meaning and purpose of a situation. But right now, I don’t feel that way. And, AND (a big ‘and’), for the first time in eight/nine years of living here in Ohio, I have not had a battle with winter depression. Nope, I sure haven’t. AND it’s been the worst winter I’ve ever lived through. Snow snow snow!!! There is still snow on the ground. Snow fell at Christmas and it’s never left. It just keeps acquiring more layers of fresh snow. But tomorrow is March. And spring is RIGHT THERE…do you see it? Do you smell it? Can you FEEL it? So many things are coming together right now for me. There has been so much angst and sorrow and grief that consumed me for so long that finally I’m seeing and feeling some freedoms, as well as some blessings of enduring what I call a “back side of the desert” existence. I don’t wanna get philosophical or spiritual right now, but turning 40 this year has been poignant for me. They say, “Life begins at 40.” I believe for me this is so exceptionally true. God has really chosen this time for me to come into some things. Finally, the blanket has lifted. Years of questioning and confusion are making way for clarity and understanding. It’s a beautiful thing.

Another beautiful thing was my time in California. I am a summer time beach loving girl. My last day in LA was spent at the beach in Santa Monica. It fed my soul. I sat on the sandy curb to the board walk, ate a hot dog on a stick, watched children play on the mini-gym, listened to the seagulls cry, and let the sun fill me fill me fill me. I breathed in and out with ease and without constraint. No pressure. No hurry. It was a perfect day.

Nailing It.

I’ve been researching the work of some of my favorite masters of photography (you can find them in the 411 page under Inspirations). Therefore, I’ve really been working on shooting the decisive moment and trying to exercise my eye to see the story. Since I have decided to get back to the basics and not process my images outside of black and white conversion, I’ve found a freedom and joy in the shooting process that has eluded me in the previous months. I feel like I’m back to where my heart was captured for photography when I first started out. Amazing what simplicity can do for a person.

At some point I will return to my portrait work, hopefully with a renewed interest and a renewed perspective. Ultimately though, my style will come from the thing I love and that is shooting the human condition without constraint or definition. Without the feeling that I’ve got to get the trite posing that has become so common in even “lifestyle” portraiture. I don’t know how this will happen for me. But I’m evolving. With portraiture there is still so much control that must be exuded because a photographer is shooting for the client…ultimately. Even when they’re shooting from their own creativity.

I guess just like in my real every day to day life, I want people to think. If I can continue to shoot images that make people think or feel or remember or wonder, like they do for me, then I’ve done what I’ve set out to accomplish. I think at heart, I missed a calling to be a photo-journalist. Maybe that’s arrogant. I’m sure it is. I’m just trying to shoot what speaks to me.

This image is my favorite from my trip to Los Angeles. I think it resembles closely what I want to convey. I look at it and I see a famous pop culture entity and the people on the street moving, going, and completely without knowledge that I had captured them doing so. It screams big city to me. When I look at this image, I see how common the pop culture is and how no one seems to be interested in its presence. I wonder where the people are going, thinking, and what is going on in each individual’s lives. I try to guess which ones are tourists and which ones are local. It’s the ebb and flow of awareness or lack thereof.

Four Weeks Out

I’m four weeks out from my Thailand trip. I’m still waiting on my passport that was to have only taken three to five weeks to receive. It’s been four. Also, I’m beginning to really consider the equipment I want to bring along and so far, I’ve definitely decided on the Canon 7d. The ability of this camera to bring in light is astounding. I’m bringing several different lens’ with me but I’m going to rent a wide angle lens as I do not have one in my bag at this time. Which reminds me that I’m also in the market for a good camera bag. One that fits International flight regulation overhead compartment bins (which may be smaller?). So I don’t have to fear it being checked and manhandled in the process. I’m also making my final accommodations decisions. And am fighting off nerves. Nerves…where do I pack those?
